COVID-19 Update: Hang in there... You're doing great.

As we continue to consume the news of the national impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in certain regions of the country, it can be easy to lose sight of all the positive things that people right here in Florida are doing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and bring this nasty virus to a halt. So hang in there, you’re doing great! Staying home, avoiding large groups, washing your hands thoroughly and frequently, and cleaning and sanitizing as best you can are all simple and excellent ways to pull together as part of a nation that is working to curtail further infection rates. Keep up the good work!

People are recovering… All 22 million of us Floridians are learning a lot in a very short time, together, and while the news you’re hearing on a national scale may appear grim, and life in isolation feels lonely and difficult at the moment, remember that this country is replete with stories of heroism, courage, compassion, and kindness. We have some of the best caregivers in the world, from all over the world, working on solutions...right now. What you don’t hear in the news is that people who have been infected with COVID-19 are recovering quickly and fully. The World Health Organization (WHO) says those that experience mild symptoms typically recover from the illness in about two weeks, while those who experience more severe illness could take up to six weeks to recover. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment and while people of all ages can contract or transmit COVID-19, this virus is most dangerous for older patients and those with serious underlying health issues. Remember this… Isolation is the key to defeating the virus. We encourage you to abide by the letter and the spirit of the State’s current restrictions. The best method of avoiding the virus is simply staying home. If you have the primary symptoms – fever, cough, body aches, no sense of smell or taste – you should assume you have COVID-19. Don’t panic. Isolate and take care of yourself with over the counter cold and flu medicines and lots of fluids. The virus will dehydrate you, so you must force yourself to drink a lot of fluid to stay ahead of it… Anyone who is infected with COVID-19 (or any other virus or infection) and having significant respiratory problems should be evaluated by a doctor.
